Have you ever read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe? Four children mysteriously find their way into the land of Narnia. They are not sure what to expect. They meet unusual creatures. They experience strange places. They face difficulties and dangers. They must exercise courage, and they are forever changed.
Adventures are often scary and uncertain. That’s why many struggle leaving what is safe and familiar for new opportunities.
Bilbo Baggins, from The Hobbit, famously said: “We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty, disburbing, uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner!”
Adventures are uncomfortable, yes, but they build virtue and make life enjoyable.
You don’t have to travel to a distant land for an adventure; you could have one in your community. An adventure could involve volunteering at a church, nonprofit organization, or business. You will gain knowledge and skills and make new friends. Here are some tips:
- If you volunteer in a business, nonprofit, or church, learn as much as you can about the organization.
- Take notes of problems you come across or hear about. Also, when you hear about a solution that works, jot that down, too.
- Whatever job you are given, make sure you do it well and on time. You will gain trust as a reliable person. Do this with small things; eventually, you might be given bigger tasks and responsibilities.
- Always be friendly, positive, and respectful.
Is there an adventure you want to take or learn about?
